From the Dickens Community List (March 7, 2013):
We launched the Instruments for Change project a couple of weeks ago after
seeing a YouTube video called Landfill Harmonic
[http://vimeo.com/52711779]. The video is about a remarkable musical
orchestra in Cateura Paraguay, where young musicians play instruments made
from trash.
The video inspired a simple idea. What if we could send some proper
instruments from Vancouver, or the rest of Canada, to the children of
Cateura. There must be so many unused instruments around in our homes,
schools, orchestras, music stores etc. We just have to locate them, gather
them up and ship them. It is that simple.
We are working with the enthusiastic support of Favio Chavez, the Director
of the Landfill Harmonic orchestra.
To date we have received offers of up to 80 instruments. Dickens Student
Council has decided to hold an instrument drive after Spring Break.
